The Eye That Holds You Still

I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty that time leaves behind. Peeling paint, cracked walls, rust, salt and weathered surfaces aren’t signs of decay to me, they’re evidence that something has lived. They carry history, and I try to capture that same sense of history in my work.

In this painting, I wanted the eye to feel as though it had slowly emerged from the surface, as if it had always been there, patiently waiting to be discovered. It isn’t intended to represent a particular person. Instead, I hope it becomes a mirror, allowing you to project your own thoughts, memories and emotions into the work.

The cracks and layers surrounding the eye are as important as the eye itself. They speak of resilience, reminding us that our experiences, both the beautiful and the difficult, shape who we become. I don’t believe imperfections diminish us; I think they make us more interesting, more honest and more human.

I often think my paintings ask us to slow down. The longer you spend with them, the more they reveal. Subtle textures begin to surface, colours shift, and what first appears worn starts to feel full of life.

For me, this piece is about quiet connection. It’s a reminder that beneath the layers we all accumulate, there remains something that continues to see, to hope and to recognise itself in others
